38 Weeks!

38 weeks

How far along? 38 weeks…  We’re almost there!

Baby Size: Size of a spaghetti squash – about 7 lbs. and 19 1/2 inches tall

Total weight gain: 28 lbs

Maternity clothes? Mostly maternity with a few non-maternity mixed in, such as the dress in the pic’ above.

Sleep: What’s sleep??  Thankfully I’ll be prepared for the sleepless nights with a newborn.

Miss Anything?  Wine, beer, running, bending over, laying on my stomach at the beach (!), walking without huffin’ & puffin’, wearing my wedding rings….   just to name a few ;)

Movement:  ALL the time…  She’s currently kicking away under my right ribs as I type this out.

Best moments this week: Checking the last items off our ‘Baby Doyle’ to-do-list!  Annnnd another best moment was finally buying a DSLR camera.  I’ve wanted one for years and figured we should get it now so we’ll be able to take quality pictures at the hospital.

This also means my blog won’t be full of iPhone pictures anymore. :)

Food cravings: Lots of sweets (surprise, surprise) including fresh fruits (pineapples, strawberries + peaches) + any form of chocolate.

Peach greek yogurt, chopped peach + home-made granola…  can’t get enough peaches!

Chocolate Almond Smoothie…

Food aversions: Nope

Gender: GIRL

Symptoms: Swollen feet/fingers (I even took my wedding rings off this week), shortness of breath and I’ve had cramps the last few days (which is a sign of labor, I hope?)

Workouts: Still going out for a 3 mile-power walk everyday and doubled-up my walks over the weekend….

And I try to end my walks with a bunch of squats, lunges, push-ups and yoga stretches.

Looking forward to: Her arrival!  There’s still 11 days ’til her due date but I’m really hoping she makes an early appearance. :)

What’s in my Hospital Bag?

hospital bag essentials

Oh, the hospital bag…  For some reason this whole ‘pack the hospital bag’ thing actually stressed me out.  Well, packing in general stresses me out and usually involves multiple glasses of white wine (please tell me I’m not the only one who needs alcohol to pack? :)) But since that wasn’t an option, I did what I do best and resorted to Pinterest for help.  After checking-out what other mom’s packed and talking to my mom friends, I was finally able to pack my bag today!

Hospital Bag

Soooo what’s in the bag?

For Me:

  • Comfy robe + nursing gown
  • Nursing tank-tops + loose, cotton shorts
  • Nursing bras
  • Granny panties: Although I’m really looking forward to the great mesh ‘underwear’ that the hospital supplies ;)
  • Socks + slippers
  • Toiletries: Travel size s + c, toothbrush, hair elastics, headbands, body wash, shower cap, deodorant, prenatal vitamins, etc.  Also, Lanonin cream just in case the hospital doesn’t provide it.
  • Going-home outfit: It’s only a 5 minute drive home so I just packed comfy shorts + a tank top

For Baby:

  • Onesies: NB + size 0-3
  • Accessories: Socks, hat, mittens
  • Swaddle blanket: We’ll probably use the hospital swaddle blankets but figured I’d pack a cute polka dotted one for pictures   .
  • Newborn diapers: I heard some hospital don’t supply newborn-sized diapers?!  So I packed these just in case…
  • Pacifiers
  • Hand Sanitizer: Technically it’s not for the baby but for me and anyone else touching the little one

Misc. Items:

  • Boppy pillow: For breast-feeding
  • Night-light: So we don’t use the bright overhead lights during the late-night feedings
  • Snacks: Granola bars, trail-mix, hard candy, mints
  • Book + magazines
  • Camera + charger
  • Pillows + blankets: For the hubby’s ‘bed’

 Last Minute Items To Pack:

These are the items that I use on a daily basis so I’ll quickly pack them up before we take off…

  • My fan: I can’t sleep without it
  • Electronics: iPhone’s (work + personal), laptop, chargers
  • Hair brush
  • Make-up bag
  • Face lotion

Moms: Am I missing anything?  Or am I packing too much??

The Nursery

the nursery

Well, the nursery is officially done!

I thought it would be finished months ago but I took my time picking-out everything and making sure the end result would be a peaceful, cozy, comfortable nursery for our little girl. :)   A little about the room…   it’s ‘L’ shaped with slanted ceilings on the right-side so it was challenging to work with but once we got the bigger items in there (dresser + crib), we were able to figure out what could fit where.  And as for the colors and themes, we stuck with soft colors including lots of gray and touches of pinks and went with animal themed with a focus on cute, ‘lil elephants.

I saw the ‘wall library’ on Pinterest and knew it’d be perfect for the nursery.  It was also really easy & fun to fill up since my baby-shower invites asked the guests to bring a signed children’s book in lieu of a card.

The dresser is large enough to hold a ton of clothing, blankets, accessories and also serve as a changing table.

the nursery closet

Right now the closet is full of random stuff (books, toys, extra diapers, etc.) but I’ll eventually stop over at the Container Store and find a better way to organize it (or so I say ;)).

Lastly, I’m planning on adding a few more small touches, such as framed newborn pictures and some more elephant inspired items to the room but for now, the nursery is finished.  And in only a few short weeks I’ll be able to show it to my little girl!

36 Weeks

Hello, hello!

Well we’re 36 weeks along aka 9 MONTHS PREGNANT!!  I can’t believe there’s only 4 weeks (give or take) to go!  Since we finished up the nursery this week, we also had to take down the chalkboard with the weekly countdown in order to hang-up other pictures…  So instead of my usual picture, I’ll instead show you 3 recent pic’s of the baby bump…

1. – Trying to pose with the chalkboard, 2. – My cousin and I, and 3. – Close-up of ‘the bump’

How far along? 36 weeks

Baby Size: The size of a ripe papaya (close to 19″ long and 6 lbs.)

Total weight gain: 26-27 lbs

Maternity clothes? Yep, I’d say 90% of my clothes are maternity.

Sleep: Oh, sleep.  I’m comfortable and still haven’t used the big ‘ol pregnancy pillow but I’m going to the bathroom 3x a night and the little peanut loves to move around during the night so sleep has been OK to say the least.

Miss Anything?  Fun, summer beers….  Can’t wait to drink a Whale’s Tale Pale Ale + Sam’s Summer in August.

Movement:  She’s a very active little lady.  She definitely favors my right side and loves to kick under my ribs and poke her little booty out all the time. :)

Best moments this week: Getting my monthly mani/pedi, hanging with my family at my mom’s annual Lobster Fest,

and finishing up the nursery (full blog post on the nursery coming this week!)

Food cravings: The usual cravings but now I want everything really cold…  ice, cold water, fresh fruit (especially fresh pineapple + strawberries), chocolate popsicles + smoothies.

A creamy, pineapple, mango smoothie…

Food aversions: Nada

Gender: Girl

Symptoms: Well it’s official; I have cankles…   and swollen feet!  What the heck?  I’m also constantly out of breath.

Workouts: Workouts were really toned down last week.  I went on lots of power-walks to reach my 10K steps a day,

and I also did a bunch of workouts from the awesome ‘Knocked-Up Fitness Guide To Pregnancy’ book:

Looking forward to:  Checking a lot of items off our ‘Baby To-Do-List’ this week, including:

Monday: Wash, fold + organize all the baby clothes, blankets, towels, etc.

Tuesday: 2-hour breast-feeding class

Wednesday: 36-week check-up

Thursday: ‘Meet + Greet’ with the pediatrician

Friday: Nothing?  I hope…

Saturday: Infant CPR/First-Aid class in the morning and hopefully getting the car seat inspected by the local Fire Department in the afternoon.

Slowly but surely we’re getting there! :)

34 Weeks

How far along? 34 weeks

Baby Size: The size of a Savoy Cabbage – about 5 lbs and 18 inches long

Total weight gain: 24 lbs

Maternity clothes? Yep, probably about 85% of my clothes are maternity.  Thankfully my workout capris and shorts still fit so I haven’t bought too many new workout outfits.

Sleep: Is alright…   Between being a restless sleeper, getting up to pee at least twice a night & my cat sleeping on my head, it’s really hard getting a good nights sleep.  But on a good note, I’ll be ready for the sleepless nights once the ‘lil one arrives. ;)

Miss Anything?  Booze, running & being able to eat a turkey sandwich without microwaving the deli meat…

Movement: Feeling lots of wiggles and little kicks.

Best moments this week: I don’t know if this qualifies as ‘the best moment’ but we took a birthing class this weekend and did the hospital tour so now I feel a bit more prepared for everything.  We also had a much-needed, relaxing afternoon at the beach yesterday….  :)

Food cravings: Same as always: WATER, fruit {mostly pineapple & strawberries}, and chocolate…

Food aversions: Nope

Gender: Girl

Symptoms: This shortness of breath thing is getting to be ridiculous…  I can’t even walk a flight of stairs without becoming huffing & puffing…   wtf?  But besides that, I’m feeling pretty good.

Workouts: Nothing too crazy for workouts but I did go out for a 3 mile power-walk all 7 days last week.

And I made sure to stop at the park benches for multiple rounds of push-ups, tricep dips & lunges.

And here’s one of my top tips about working-out while pregnant….

stretching

Always, always end your workout with a good stretch.  I know I sucked at stretching back in my running days and really only stretched after 10+ miles runs but it’s a whole new ball game when you’re pregnant.  With your muscles and ligaments stretching and pulling, it’s really important to end your workouts with at least 5-10 minutes of stretching.  I usually just grab my water bottle from my car, sit in the shade and try to make the stretching session a little more enjoyable. :)

Looking forward to: Meeting our girl, of course. And looking forward to my brother, SIL and 2 nephews flying in from Portland, OR next weekend…  I haven’t seen them in almost a year!

Alright, time to log off and watch the World Cup…  USA! USA! USA!   Enjoy your Sunday evening, everyone!

32 Weeks

How far along? 32 weeks.  Just 8 weeks to go!

Baby Size: The size of a Florida Pomelo {I’ve actually never heard of a pomelo before?}  and close to 18 inches long and about 4 lbs

Total weight gain: 22 lbs

Maternity clothes? Maternity pants, skirts and a few maternity shirts.  As you can see in the pic’ above, my bump has definitely grown over the past few weeks so it’s time I stock up on maternity tops!  I’ll probably hit up Gap and Old Navy since they have the best maternity clothes.

Sleep: is OK – some nights are better than others.

Miss Anything?  Fun/summery beers, wine and running.

Movement: Yep, lots of kicks and wiggles.

Best moments this week: We finally purchased book shelves @ Ikea and hung them up in the nursery, yay!

And the other best moment was enjoying a day-date with Mike yesterday afternoon…

It was perfect weather – 80’s & sunny – so we headed to Danvers Yacht Club and relaxed on the patio with some app’s and drinks…   I had a few sips of delicious white wine then switched over to water while Mike enjoyed his dirty martini’s.  Have I mentioned I can’t wait to drink alcohol again?? ;)

Food cravings: Same as the last few months…   tons of ice, cold water, fresh fruit, smoothies and chocolate of any kind.

strawberry water

I also started adding fresh & frozen fruits to my water to mix it up.  Frozen pineapples are my favorite with strawberries in second place…  :)

Food aversions: Not really

Gender: Girl

Symptoms: Just shortness of breath and some hip/joint pains when I get up too fast.

Looking forward to: Book Club on Thursday, meeting a friend in the city for dinner on Friday night and our ‘Baby 101 and Safety’ class on Saturday!  I’m actually pretty excited for this free all-day class.  Mike and I both know the very basics of babysitting so it’ll be really helpful to learn not only baby CPR and first-aid, but also how to swaddle a baby {which I hear is *key* to a good nights sleep} and all the other do’s and don’ts of parenting.

Workouts: I went for a 3 mile power-walk 6 times last week and I did a bunch of lunges and push-ups after my walks but that’s about it.  I was pooped from my seasonal allergies so my workouts were pretty low-key & lame.  But on a positive note, I did walk at least 10K steps everyday!  I swear, wearing a pedometer really motivates me to get up and walk more often.

And to make up for my lack of exercise last week, I’m planning on adding a few circuit workouts and prenatal yoga videos to my workout schedule this week. :)

Hope you’re all having a relaxing Sunday evening!

10 Superfoods for Pregnant Women {or Anyone}!

Happy Sunday, friends!!!  Hope you’re all able to enjoy the nice, sunny weather this weekend!

So the other day, I was online about to order Organic Burst Baobab Powder but like I do with most new foods, I googled it to make sure it’s safe to consume while pregnant.  Well, not only is it safe but it’s also a superfood!  Say whaaaaat?!  Here’s exactly what the internet says about Baobab Powder:

‘Made from the baobab fruit, the baobab powder contains high amounts of potassium, calcium, phosphorus, and iron. It has about ten times more vitamin C than the oranges. The African women enjoy eating the baobab fruit pulp during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The powder can be added to desserts, drinks, and snacks.’

Obviously, I quickly ordered this powder and now I’m {im}patiently waiting for it to arrive in the mail. Yay, for superfoods!

While I’m no expert on what you should and shouldn’t eat while pregnant, I do know which foods are super-healthy and should be kept in your kitchen throughout your pregnancy.  And if you’re not prego, these foods are still awesome and should be included in your diet. :)

Here’s a list of some of the superfoods you should consume during your pregnancy:

Avocados are loaded with potassium, folic acid & ‘good fats’.  You can add them to your sandwich, salad or just cut it in half, toss some salt & pepper on it and grill it up for a tasty ‘lil snack.

Beans provide you and your baby with fiber, protein, iron, folate, calcium, & zinc {<— I actually didn’t know about all of these benefits until recently…  I’m definitely adding more beans to my diet!}  Simple add the beans {navy, pinto, black, garbanzo beans, etc.} to your salads, soups or stir-fry.

Berries are packed with vitamin C, potassium, folate & fiber.  Plus, they’re delicious!  So add a bunch of blueberries, blackberries, strawberries or raspberries to your meals & snacks.

Dark Greens such as spinach, kale, Swiss chard and other dark-colored greens are a great source of vitamins, minerals and valuable plant compounds that fight disease.  A great way to sneak these greens into your diet is by adding them to your smoothie!

Eggs contain a lot of protein which provides amino acids to you and your baby.  They also have more than a dozen vitamins and minerals, including choline, which is good for baby’s brain development.

Greek Yogurt is high in protein, calcium, vitamin B & Zinc.  So start your morning off with a greek yogurt or enjoy it as an afternoon snack.

Nuts & Seeds are are full of fiber, vitamin E & magnesium.  I always keep a bag of trail mix at home and at work for when I’m craving a sweet & salty snack.

Salmon (wild-caught) contains omega-3 fatty acids which are great for your babies brain and eyes.  Make sure you eat wild caught salmon and not farm-raised {yuck}.  And read the labels carefully when buying salmon – sometimes they trick you by saying ‘fresh salmon’ but in the little print below it says ‘farm-raised’.  So ‘fresh’ does not always = healthy.

Sweet Potatoes are a great source of vitamin A, vitamin C, folate & fiber.

Whole grains are loaded with folic acid, iron & have more fiber than white bread and rice.  Try eating whole-grain cereals, oatmeal, brown rice or pasta on a daily basis.

Do you eat these superfoods?

What are your other favorite superfoods not included on this list?

Workouts: Well, after falling while running last Tuesday, I’ve decided to take a break from ‘running’ (it was more like a really sloooow jog than a run) until after baby Doyle is born.  Even though I can’t run, there’s still plenty of options out there!

Last week I focused on walking 10,000 steps a day:

fitbit

Completing the daily Pilates Summer Series challenge:

pilates summer series

And doing prenatal yoga:

So far I’ve only found 1 prenatal yoga class that I really like/works with my schedule so I’ve been going to that class the last couple of Saturday mornings (which is so nice working-out with the other soon-to-be mom’s!)  Besides that class, I just follow along to different YouTube video’s at home.  I don’t have a favorite prenatal yoga video yet but I’ll let ya know once I find a good one. :)

(Last Thursday’s 3 mile walk/jog)

Looking forward to: The warm weather this week – it’s going to be in the 80’s today!  I’m also looking forward to gardening and assembling our flower window boxes next weekend.

Movement: Although she’s not moving as much this week, she was definitely at it last night. :)

Pregnancy symptoms: Tired but overall feeling really good.
